Close Multiple Windows

Just a small trick wanted to share.

If you just opened a number of separate, related windows (a folder inside a folder, and so on), there's an easier way to close them all at a-time. Hold down the Shift key as you click the CLOSE button in the upper-right corner of the last window opened. Doing so closes that window and all windows that came before it.

Win XP Clear Page file on shutdown

This is a very simple and useful trick for your computer . It allows you to clear virtual memory pagefile whenever the system gets shutdown.

Go to :
Control panel ->Administrative tools -> local security policy -> then goto local policies -> security options.

On the right hand side you will see many options . Look for the option "Shutdown: Clear Virtual Memory Pagefile" . Right click on it and go to properties and make it "enable".

That's it you are done.

How to Install Netbeui Protocol on a Windows XP

This is a useful explanation because the NetBEUI protocol is not included in the list of protocols in Windows XP. The files that are needed to install the protocol are included in the XP CD. It is important to note that the NetBEUI protocol is not by default installed on Windows XP.

The files that are needed to install the NetBEUI protocol are Netnbf.inf and Nbf.sys.

Steps to install the NetBEUI protocol:

1. Right click My network places and then properties .

2. Right-click the adapter you want to add NetBEUI to, and then click Properties.

3. On the General tab, click Install.

4. Click Protocol, and then click Add.

5. Click Have Disk, insert your Windows XP CD.

6. Navigate to Valueadd\msft\net\netbeui folder, click the Netnbf.inf file, and then click Open.

7. Click OK, and then click OK to complete the installation.

8. Restart your computer.

Make an executable file

This Is How You Make A ".Exe file"

* Go to start run and type iexpress

* Then select create new self extraction and click next

* Then select extract files and run an installation command and then click next

Know your computer up time

Well it happens always , we sit on computer and after sometime when we look at the clock we see that Oh, my god !!!!! so much time has passed. but we don't know exactly how much. So, here is a very small tool which you will create by yourself .

* Just copy the below lines in notepad:

* Now save this file with the name uptime.bat on your desktop.

Change the windows default identity

In windows XP, you can change the windows default identity (Computer Manufacturer Logo and other information's) with your own private identity there.

* Open notepad and write same as shown below

* Now close the all files and restart your computer after any changes to go into effect. To verify these changes, right click on My Computer and open Properties as shown in picture.

*Under General tab, verify the system properties with new settings.

Create your own XP Disk Cleanup Tool

Here is how to create an unattended disk cleanup which will also empty your prefetch folder .

* Create a new text file and place the following contents inside
just copy and paste the below lines in notepad.

c:\windows\system32\cleanmgr.exe /dc /sageset: 1
c:
cd \
cd c:\windows\prefetch
del *.* /q

* Save the file, with the extension .bat

Suppose name it diskclean.bat

* Double click the file. This will run the Disk Cleanup program in a special mode which asks what items you want cleaned when Disk Cleanup performs an unattended cleanup. Check the items you wish to be cleaned up, then click OK.

* Now again Right-click on the diskclean.bat file and click edit. Change the first line

c:\windows\system32\cleanmgr.exe /dc /sageset: 1

to

c:\windows\system32\cleanmgr.exe /dc /sagerun: 1

* Save the file.

* You can execute this file in place of running Disk Cleanup, or, to have this program run unattended, run the Add Scheduled Task Wizard in the Control Panel and create a scheduled task using the diskclean.bat file you just created.

Safe way to increase shutdown time

When working on your PC, doing anything or internet surfing means that the pages get loaded into the RAM, to save RAM Windows to put various files into your Page File . Microsoft has left an option to clear out the Pagefile on shutdown off as default, here is the way to switch it on. This increases shutdown time.

* Open Run and type regedit , click ok

* Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

* Select ClearPageFileAtShutdown from the list on the right.

* Right on it and select Modify.

* Change the value to 1 to enable.

* Reboot your computer

Increase hard disk speed

To speed up your hard disk speed we need to configure a special buffer in the computer's memory .

Do this trick if you have 256MB RAM or higher.

Follow these steps:

Run SYSEDIT.EXE from the Run command.

Expand the system.ini file window.

Scroll down almost to the end of the file till you find a line called [386enh].

Press Enter to make one blank line, and in that line type Irq14=4096

This line IS CASE SENSITIVE.

Click on the File menu, then choose Save.
Close SYSEDIT and reboot your computer.

Delete An Undeletable File

* Click the Start Button.

* Click All Programs followed by Accessories.

* In the Accessories drop down menu click Command Prompt.

* The Command Prompt window will now open.

* Close all other programs that are running with the exception of the Command Prompt.

* Now click Start and then Run.

* In the Run dialog box type: taskmgr.exe.

* In the Task Manager window click on the Processes tab.

* From the processes list highlight Explorer.exe and then click the End Process button.

* Don't close the Task Manager window, leave it open. You should have the Command Prompt and the Task Manager window open.

* Now return to the Command Prompt window and change the directory to the directory that contains the file(s) you wish to delete.

* At the Command Prompt type: del (filename) (where the (filename) is the name of the file you want to delete).

* Press Enter to delete the file.

* Now go back to the Task Manager window.

* Click File>New Task.

* In the New task dialog box type: explorer.exe.

* Finally close the Task Manager Window and the Command Prompt Window.

The simplest way to backup your registry

Close all programs running on your desktop

Then go to Start

Go to Run and type regedit and hit okay. This will open this program:

Go to File --->Export...This will open a box where you can save this backup registry file.

Give it a file name and save it to a folder. Make sure the Export range is selected as ALL

Now that you have it backed up its very easy to restore, just do everything you did but when you want to restore it, just go to File--->Import--->Select the backup file and click okay...this will restore you registry back to the default.

Convert FAT to NTFS file system

To convert a FAT partition to NTFS, perform the following steps.
Click Start, click Programs, and then click Command Prompt.

In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type cmd and then click OK.

At the command prompt, type CONVERT [driveletter]: /FS:NTFS.

Convert.exe will attempt to convert the partition to NTFS.

Although the chance of corruption or data loss during the conversion from FAT to NTFS is minimal, it is best to perform a full backup of the data on the drive that it is to be converted prior to executing the convert command.

Pop Up a message when your system starts

Pop Up a message when your system starts.

Pop up banner which can contain any message you want to display just before a user
log in.

Go to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Polic
ies\System.

Now create a new string Value in the right pane named LegalNoticeCaption and enter
the value that you want to see in the Menu Bar (e.g- Back again).

Now create yet another new string value and name it LegalNoticeText. Modify it and insert the message you want to display (e.g- I am glad you are back)

Each time Windows boots. This can be effectively used to display the company's private policy or company's Name each time the user logs in.

Change “AM” and “PM” displayed near the System Clock

Replace the AM or PM next to the system time.

You can add "Day" and "Night" or anything you like that consists of 8 characters or less.

Open the RegEdit and
navigate to the following registry key:

KEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\International.

Add two new String values, "s1159" and "s2359". Most probably those keys will be already present. If it is not there then create them.

Right click the value name and modify. Enter
anything you like up to 8 characters.

If you enter two different values when modifying, you
can have the system tray display the two different values in the AM and PM .

Do not use this tip if you are using any software during the trial period as it will corrupt the trial license.

Change the text on the Start button

Download "Resource Hacker" tool from http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/

Then make a backup copy of the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer. Place it in a folder somewhere on your hard drive where it will be safe. Start Resource Hacker and open explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer.exe

The category we are going to be using is String Table. Expand it by clicking the plus sign then navigate down to and expand string 37 followed by highlighting 1033. If you are using the Classic Layout rather than the XP Layout, use number 38. The right hand pane will display the stringtable . We’re going to modify item 578, currently showing the word “start” just as it displays on the current Start button.

There is no magic here. Just double click on the word “start” so that it’s highlighted, making sure the quotation marks are not part of the highlight. They need to remain in place, surrounding the new text that you’ll type. Go ahead and type your new entry.

Click Compile Script and then save the altered file using the Save As command on the File Menu. Do not use the Save command – Make sure to use the Save As command and choose a name for the file. Save the newly named file to C:\Windows.

Now that the modified explorer.exe has been created it’s necessary to modify the registry so the file will be recognized when the user logs on to the system. If you don’t know how to access the registry , go to Start Run and type regedit in the Open: field. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon

Double click the Shell entry to open the Edit String dialog box . In Value data: line, enter the name that was used to save the modified explorer.exe file. Click OK.

Close Registry Editor and reboot the system . If all went as planned you should see your new Start button with the revised text.

But , But But let me tell you one thing after this trick your start menu -search option will not work . Rest everything on your computer will remain stable. Well if you don't use search option then then this trick is for you. Just write your name instead of "start" and showoff. Remember not to change the word more than 5 characters .

Install Windows Media Player 11 without actvating windows

First install Winzip on your computer. Then ,

Download Windows Media Player 11

Go to this link and download it http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/AllDownloads.aspx?displaylang=en&qstechnology=

The file you downloaded should be named "wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe"

Right click on the downloaded file and because you have winzip installed, Click on Extract to Folder.

Now you will get a folder called wmp11-windowsxp-x86-enu

In that folder you will see two setup files "wmfdist11" and "wmp11". we just have to do with these two files.

First run " wmfdist11"

After installation is finished then run " wmp11"

This will install Windows Media Player 11 and thus it will not ask for any activation .

Once you finish the install, reboot and have a working Windows Media Player 11 that will not require activation on a non-activated XP install. ENJOY...............:-)

Fasten your Start menu

First click on Start button then type Regedit in Run option.

In Registry Editor panel go to the path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ MenuShowDelay

By default the value "MenuShowDelay=400", but you can set value between 0 to 400. Now put the value "MenuShowDelay"=0 to speed up.

Now close the registry editor and restart your computer after any changes to go into effect.

Rename Recycle bin

1. Click Start / Run

2. Type regedit and press enter.

3. Open the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT folder

4. Open the CLSID folder

5. Open the {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} folder

6. Open the ShellFolder folder

7. Change the "Attributes" data value from "40 01 00 20" to "50 01 00 20". Once completed change the "CallForAttributes" dword value to "0x00000000" (double-click and change value data to 0). You must change both of these values to get the rename to appear.

After performing the above steps you will be able to rename the icon like any other icon. Right-click the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop and click Rename and rename it to whatever you wish.

Speed up your firefox browser

1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipeliningnetwork.http.proxy.pipeliningnetwork.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages 2-3 times faster now.

Stopping Unneeded Startup Services

Along with the core operating system and programs that Windows XP runs when it
starts, there is also a host of services involved. Many of these services are necessary
for Windows XP to operate correctly. However, many of them are for features in
Windows XP that you may not use at all. You can disable any
service that you do not want to run. The fewer services that run, the more quickly
Windows XP will boot.

To reduce the number of services that start on bootup, you can access two differentareas of Windows XP.

-- The first is the System Configuration Utility. You can do that by entering the
command “msconfig” in the run menu.
Start Run “msconfig” (without quotes) Hit Enter
The Services tab shows you the services that start when the computer
boots. You can stop a service from starting by simply clearing the check box
next to the service and clicking OK.

-- However, before you do so, there is another way to disable services that you
may prefer because the interface gives you more information about the service
in question.

-- Open Control Panel Aministrative Tools Services or
Start Run “services.msc” Hit Enter

Take a quick look at common services you may want to live without:
Automatic Updates: This service enables Windows XP to check the Web
automatically for updates. If you don't want to use Automatic Updates, you can
disable the service.

Computer Browser: If your computer is not on a network, you don't need this service.
If you are on a network, leave it alone.

DHCP Client: If you are not on a network, you do not need this service. If you are on
a small workgroup, you can still increase boot time by configuring manual IP.

DNS Client: If you are not on a network, you do not need this service.

Error Reporting and Event Log: You don't have to use these services but they can be
very helpful, so I would leave them configured as automatic.

Fax: If you don't use your computer for fax services, you can disable this one.

Help and Support: Disable if you never use the Windows XP Help and Support
Center.

IMAPI CD-Burning COM: This service enables you to burn CDs on your computer.
If you never burn CDs, you can disable the service without any second thoughts.

Indexing Service: Your computer keeps an index of all the files. But if you rarely
search for files, the service is just a resource hog. You can stop it

Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing: If you do not use these features, plz
disable.

Infrared Monitor: If you do not use infrared devices, you can disable this service.

Messenger: This service sends alert messages on a local area network (it is not the
same as Windows Messenger). If you are not on a network, you can disable this
service.

Print Spooler: If you do not do any printing from the computer, you can disable this
service. If you print, make sure you leave it as automatic.

Remote Registry: This service allows remote users to modify the Registry on your
computer. If you are not on a network, you can disable this service.

System Restore Service: This service allows you to use System Restore. If you have
turned off System Restore anyway, you do not need to turn off the service.

Themes: If you do not use themes, you can disable this service.

Windows Image Acquisition: If you do not use scanners or digital cameras, you can
disable.

Wireless Zero Configuration: If do not use wireless networking devices, you can
disable.
